Gynecology and Obstetrics
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides comprehensive women’s healthcare services, from primary to tertiary levels, and is recognized for its commitment to patient-centered care, research, and medical education. Established as a distinct department in 2005, it boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a premier birthing center, maternity ward, and specialized outpatient services. The department serves as a tertiary referral center for women’s health in Bhutan.

Facilities
Birthing Center
Located on Level 2, Block C, this center is renowned in the SAARC region for its top-notch facilities. It features five private, air-conditioned delivery rooms equipped with advanced medical devices, CTG monitors, and modern delivery beds. Additional amenities include:
- Nursing duty station
- Staff changing room and doctor’s rest room
- Equipment room with ultrasound and incubators
- Postnatal and first-stage rooms
Maternity Ward
Located on Level 3, Block C, the 36-bed maternity ward provides inpatient care for both obstetrics and gynecology patients, serving one of the highest patient turnovers at JDWNRH.
Outpatient Unit (OPU)
Located in Chamber 15 of the old emergency area, the OPU handles outpatient consultations led by specialists, residents, and interns. Facilities include:
- Reception front desk
- Four consultation rooms with IT support
- Outpatient CTG and ultrasound services
Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Unit
Established in 2005, this unit in Chamber 27 offers perinatal ultrasound and counseling services for high-risk pregnancies using a high-end Philips iu22 ultrasound machine.

Residents and Interns
- Residents: Two new residents join each year in the 4-year MD Obs & Gyn program (since 2014).
- Interns: Interns, primarily from Sri Lanka, have been part of the team since 2013.

The nursing team manages the birthing center and maternity ward across three shifts, demonstrating dedication and commitment to high-quality patient care.

Future Plans
The department aims to enhance its service quality through the following initiatives:
1. Infertility Clinic
To address the rising infertility cases, plans include an Infertility Clinic with facilities for Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI).
2. Minimal Access Surgery
Efforts are underway to establish full minimal access surgery capabilities, with ongoing staff training.
3. Urogynecology Services
With an increase in urinary conditions among aging women, the department plans to initiate urogynecology services and urodynamic studies.
