The Department of Orthopedics at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) is Bhutan’s premier tertiary referral center for musculoskeletal care. The department provides comprehensive, evidence-based orthopedic trauma services and subspecialist services to patients from across the country. As the national referral center for orthopedic surgery, the department is dedicated to delivering high-quality patient care, advancing orthopedic education, promoting research and innovation, and improving musculoskeletal health through specialized clinical services and outreach programs.

History of Orthopedics Services in Bhutan

The Department of Orthopedics at JDWNRH serves as Bhutan’s apex referral center for orthopedic and trauma services. Since its establishment, the department has evolved from providing basic fracture care into a modern orthopedic unit offering specialized services across multiple subspecialties.

The department receives referrals from regional referral hospitals, district hospitals, and primary healthcare centers throughout Bhutan. It manages a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions ranging from simple fractures and sports injuries to complex trauma, hand disorders, spinal disorders, joint diseases, congenital deformities, musculoskeletal infections, tumors, and reconstructive surgeries.

The department has continuously expanded its clinical expertise, surgical capabilities, and training programs to meet the growing demand for orthopedic care.

As the country’s leading orthopedic institution, the department also plays a pivotal role in residency training, continuing medical education, orthopedic technician training, national trauma care development, and collaborative outreach programs aimed at improving access to orthopedic services throughout Bhutan.

Through a dedicated team of orthopedic surgeons, residents, nurses, technicians, physiotherapists, and support staff, the department strives to provide compassionate, timely, and patient-centered musculoskeletal care.
